ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø Celebrates Black History

ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø officially kicks off Black History Month on Wednesday, February 1, with a comprehensive calendar of events highlighting the excellence of African Americans and featuring events produced and hosted by students, faculty, and staff. 

 

A spotlight will be placed on Black history in the city of Houston and on the campus of ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø. The Black History Month Convocation, which the University initiated in 2022, will take place Wednesday, February 8 in Sawyer Auditorium at 11:45 a.m. and is open to the public.

 

Other events include the inaugural ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø TALK lecture series organized by the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College. This kickoff event will feature a discussion with ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø School of Communication Interim Dean Dr. Christian Ulasi: "The Enduring Role of Media in a Democratic Society.” It takes place on February 15 at 6 p.m. in the School of Public Affairs. 

 

KÃÈÃÃÉçÇø 90.9 The Choice, along with The Vibe Houston, will highlight Houston-area trailblazers and legends on the air throughout the month, as well as provide history on how the University has made an impact on the city of Houston. KÃÈÃÃÉçÇø is participating in “Black History Houston,” a series of music and outdoor market events in downtown Houston across from the George R. Brown Convention Center. The events take place Saturdays from 1-5 p.m. beginning February 11. These events will feature a variety of musical talents, including ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø alumni and current members of the broadcast team. 

 

A sample of other events include:

• A conversation with Dr. Alicia Odewale, National Geographic African Diaspora Archaeologist; National Geographic LIVE in partnership with Disney on the Yard 
• African-American Read-in on Wednesday, February 15 from 11-1, during which readers can read from their favorite African American authors or their own creative writings for up to 10 minutes. Sign-up is required for the readers.
• Giving Voice concert featuring the ÃÈÃÃÉçÇø Choir, and the choirs from Prairie View A&M and Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church on Friday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. It will also feature world-famous tenors George Shirley and Lawrence Brownlee; beloved soprano Nicole Heaston; two gifted Houston Grand Opera Studio artists, soprano Renée Richardson and bass Cory McGee; the incredible choirs from our presenting partners; and the world-class HGO Chorus.
